WHO WE ARE
OUR STORY
Wonderfolk (previously Global Works Community Fund) was built from inequities. Founded and developed by trauma-informed educators, social workers and professional mentors with lived experience, we believe in the transformative power of representation, opportunity and exposure, and bridging the opportunity gap to them.
The Global Works Community Fund was originally founded in Colorado by Polly Moriarty in 2011. In 2015, Mark Bennett brought a new vision, and - with a community of educators and community stakeholders - overhauled the program and relocated the organization to Portland.
A trifecta of experiences led Mark to this work - starting with his own experience at 16, living with a family in rural Costa Rica for a summer - massively shifting how he saw himself in the world and what was possible for him. Years later, while working with Portland academic priority students in a Title 1 school, and leading service-learning programs in Panama during the summer, he recognized the glaring gap between his Title 1 students and transformative international experiences. The Wonderfolk team was built over the subsequent years to bridge this gap through full-scholarships and preparatory curriculum, creating the foundation for Wonderfolk.
Wonderfolk has grown over the last decade into a two-year leadership development mentor program for motivated highschoolers who face barriers to opportunity and access. Recognizing that each participant comes from a different place with needs, we prioritize equitable success with small groups and individualized mentorship. Our goal is to expand opportunities and individual horizon lines through local community engagement, a network of representative community mentors, and service-based travel programs that are inaccessible otherwise.
Our programming celebrates identity, authenticity and the strengths that are inherent in our students' lived experience and perspective. Through our diverse programmatic offerings and network we aim to provide them with varied spaces to put their leadership to the test. Our community engagement workshops span access to natural spaces, community art projects, international service travel and career exploration - meeting nearly 40 times a year. Through targeted action, Wonderfolk partners with reputable youth-serving organizations and school partners to find ideal candidates for our student fellowship.
Wonderfolk is a 501(c)3 organization. (45-4012981)
